WHAT IS METHANE?
Methane, the main component in “natural gas”, is a super potent greenhouse gas responsible for nearly one-third of global warming.

For decades, the oil and gas industry has dumped methane – along with other toxic gases – freely into the air.
EXPOSING THE TRUTH ABOUT
FOSSIL-FUEL POLLUTERS
01
DANGEROUS SUPER POLLUTANT
Methane is a greenhouse gas more than 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, and it is often emitted with a wide range of toxic chemicals and other air pollutants like cancer-causing benzene.
02
EASILY
PREVENTABLE
POLLUTANT
Existing technology could eliminate 70% of methane pollution from fossil fuel industries, often at little or no cost – and all while creating good-paying jobs.
03
SAY ONE THING, DO THE OPPOSITE
While oil and gas companies dump resources into advertising to the public and their shareholders about their self-proclaimed commitment to lowering emissions, they are also working behind the scenes to oppose rules designed to slash leakage from oil and gas wells, pipelines, and even changes to improve leak measurement and reporting.
WE DESERVE
CLEAN AIR.
METHANE:
A KILLER
IN OUR
BACKYARDS
Methane pollution is especially dangerous for the 18 million people in the U.S. who reside within one mile of active oil and gas wells. These frontline communities are forced to live with the risks of increased air pollution exposure. As the air pollution from oil and gas production drifts and impairs regional air quality, it contributes to thousands of deaths, hundreds of thousands of asthma attacks, and costs the U.S. billions of dollars in annual health damages.
